| PROFILE Dr. Gregory House is the Head of Diagnostic Medicine at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. He is a physician with a double medical speciality of Infection Diseases and Nephrology. House’s sarcastic and dry-witted outlook on life sees him diagnosing unusual medical cases in an unorthodox manner. “Misanthrope”, “cynic” and “curmudgeon” are some such descriptions people have used for House, but many prefer the succinct and to the point “he’s an arsehole”.
Which he is, and self-professed, too.
Approximately ten years ago, House suffered an infarction in his right leg which went undiagnosed for three days when doctors thought his presenting symptoms were a result of drug-seeking behaviour. House had the dead muscle bypassed, rather than amputated, in order to restore circulation to the remainder of his leg, risking organ failure and cardiac arrest. He was willing to endure excruciating post operative pain to retain the use of his leg. He now walks with a cane and has a high-dependence on the painkiller, Vicodin. Although he won’t admit it, most believe House has a drug problem with a heavy reliance on the pills. He has been through detox when Cuddy and Wilson have attempted to regulate his drug problem.
House was a brought up as a “military brat”, with his father serving in the Marine Corps when House was a child. House was close to his mother, but had a bad relationship with his father, who he claims has “an insane moral compass”. It’s suspected House may have been abused by his father in his childhood, but the sarcastic Diagnostician has never confirmed such facts.
House headed the same Diagnostics Team consisting of fellows Robert Chase, Allison Cameron and Eric Foreman for three years before they parted ways. Foreman resigned, citing he “didn’t want to be like House”, House fired Chase stating “he’d learnt enough”, and Cameron inadvertently resigned to follow Chase. House was left solitary Diagnostics Department before being forced by the Dean of Medicine, Lisa Cuddy, to hire a new team. Never one to do anything in the normal fashion, House employed close to thirty fellowship candidates to fill the positions on his team and pit them against each other for the much-wanted positions on his team. Chase, Cameron and Foreman eventually returned to the staff at Princeton Plainsboro, so House wasn’t lucky enough to get rid of them and still has to put up with them on a daily basis.
House’s social life is confined to his best friend, the Head of Oncology, Dr. James Wilson. Wilson knew House before the infarction, and looked after him when House's former relationship ended. Although they frequently analyze and criticize each other's motives, Wilson has risked his career to protect House.
